Why TrustEdge Exists

Erik D. Jones studied Electrical Engineering at UC Davis, graduated with high honors, then spent the early part of his career at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory doing national security and defense work. That experience left him with a particular sensibility: the cost of getting security wrong in high-stakes environments is not abstract. It is real.

In October 2005, he founded Jacobian Engineering with a straightforward conviction: technology services should be built around what organizations actually need — not what is easiest to sell. Jacobian started as a managed services practice and evolved, as the compliance landscape did, into one of the few firms that both manages infrastructure controls and audits against them. In 2015, Jacobian became employee-owned — aligning the team's long-term incentives with client outcomes rather than billable hours.

Over the next two decades, the team earned CISSP, HITRUST CSF Practitioner, AWS Solutions Architect Professional, and AWS Security Specialist credentials through hands-on client work — not for a marketing page. Hundreds of compliance engagements across healthcare systems, financial institutions, government agencies, and legal organizations.

Around 2023, something changed in those client conversations. Organizations with solid compliance programs — SOC 2, HITRUST, HIPAA — started arriving with a new question: "We want to adopt AI, but we don't know if we're allowed to." The answer was almost never a clean yes or no. It depended on the framework, the data, the vendor, the use case. Erik looked at that confusion and recognized it. Regulated organizations needed someone who already spoke their compliance language to help them navigate new technology. The same problem Jacobian had been solving since 2005 — just with AI instead of cloud infrastructure.

So he created TrustEdge as Jacobian's AI division. The conviction behind it is compliance-first AI — not as an ethical slogan, but as a practical methodology. Education before implementation. Consultation, not software sales. We help organizations understand their regulatory environment before a single model gets deployed. The best AI for regulated industries is built by people who already understand compliance — not AI companies trying to learn compliance after the fact.

Erik is currently pursuing a doctorate with research focused on federated learning and Byzantine attack defenses. Federated learning trains AI models without centralizing sensitive data — critical for healthcare and financial services organizations with strict data residency requirements. Byzantine attack defenses protect AI systems from adversarial manipulation at the model level. This is not an academic exercise. It directly shapes how TrustEdge designs private AI deployment, data sovereignty architecture, and model security for clients in regulated industries — and it is what separates a firm that understands the hardest problems in secure AI from one that simply resells cloud vendor tools.
